Strategy for after work? When Sozo is a good evening pick and when it isn't

Casual, half speed, and one level as a stopping point: when Sozo fits a quiet evening and when you're better off saving it for tomorrow.

The short version: Sozo – Tower Defense can be a good evening pick if you know a few dials to turn. But it can also be exactly the wrong thing when you’re tired or about to head to bed. Here’s our honest take.

For context: Sozo is a mixed-reality tower defense game for Quest 3 and 3S. Rifts open in your real walls, monsters walk a path across your floor toward the core crystal, and you defend it with towers, powers, and occasionally your fists. Price and release date were still unconfirmed as of Oct 10, 2026.

Why it made the parcel (for quiet evenings)

Three things make Sozo more evening-friendly than you’d expect from a game with monsters in it.

A calm start. According to the studio, no clock runs until your first tower is up. You put on the headset, look at where the path runs today, and then decide. No countdown pushing you the second you get home after a long day.

Dials for staying relaxed. The Casual difficulty drops enemy health to three quarters and gives a little more gold per kill. The x1 speed setting runs the game at half speed. Together, they turn a defensive battle into a laid-back planning round.

A natural stopping point. Every level ends clearly, win or lose. Then comes a results screen with stars and gems. That’s the ideal moment to call it. Unlike games with no clear ending, you’ve got a built-in stop here.

What a good after-work evening looks like

Our suggestion for a quiet evening with Sozo:

  1. Decide beforehand: one or two levels, no more. Best to pick levels you already know, or early levels of a realm. According to the studio, levels 1 through 5 of a realm are built easier, and modifiers only show up from level 6 on.
  2. Pick Casual and x1. You set difficulty before the level, and speed in the wrist menu.
  3. Read the level map. It shows whether flyers are coming and which towers make good counters. Planning ahead means less frantic reacting during the level.
  4. Stop after the results screen. Not “just one more.” The gems aren’t going anywhere.

Good to know: according to the studio, replays pay out the star reward every time. So if you replay a familiar level in the evening, you’re still collecting gems for the garage. On Casual, though, the gem reward comes out a little lower. That’s a fair trade for a quiet evening.

When you’re better off skipping it

Honesty is part of the parcel. On these evenings, we wouldn’t recommend Sozo:

When your arms are tired. Sozo is played standing. You point at build spots, tap enemies, and punch flyers out of the air. A full punch takes some swing. After a day of physical work or after a workout, that’s not exactly restful.

On Nightfall levels. According to the studio, Nightfall modifiers show up on levels 14 and 17 of each realm. Then riders and brutes turn into flyers, and flyers attack your towers. That means a lot of punching and a lot of attention. Save those levels for an alert afternoon.

On Ultra or Super Hard. The high difficulties are built for challenges, not for winding down. Ultra also makes enemies faster.

Right before bed. A tense boss level and a glowing display right before bed aren’t a good combo for most people. Better to leave some buffer between your last level and lights out.

Best for: Strategy fans with a Quest 3 or 3S who want to play one or two familiar levels calmly in the evening and know in advance when to stop.

Skip if: You’re after real relaxation while sitting down, your arms are tired, or it’s already late. A calm puzzle or a book fits better then.

Our evening alternative

If you’d rather play with no enemies at all in the evening, go for calm puzzle games on Quest like Puzzling Places or Cubism. They ask for focus, but not fast movement. Sozo is the game for Friday night, when there’s still some energy left.

Platform note

As of Oct 10, 2026: according to the studio, Sozo is made for Meta Quest 3 and 3S; price, release date, and age rating are still open. As with any VR game: clear your play space and take breaks.
