Quick verdict: a VR horror night works even with just one headset, as long as the run of show is right. HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is a great fit because the story is short, every chapter can be picked individually, and there are three arcade modes with leaderboards afterward. Here’s our plan for four adults and about two hours.
Why HAUNTED fits this night
HAUNTED is a story-driven mixed-reality horror game: through the headset you see your own room, and that’s exactly where the haunting happens. Four things make it work for a group night:
- Short story: about 25 to 35 minutes, split into a prologue, seven chapters, a finale, and an epilogue.
- Free chapter selection: Under Chapters, every chapter is unlocked from the start. So each person can play a chapter of their own.
- Arcade afterward: Three endless modes (Grave Rush, Arm Cutter, Skull Hunt) with a top-5 high score list per mode.
- Scares you can watch: Anyone spectating sees the player duck, spin, and flinch back.
Important: HAUNTED is a single-player game, and it’s PEGI 18. This night is explicitly for adults only.
Before the night: 20 minutes of prep
- Scan the room: Set up the play room using Quest’s Space Setup. When the game starts, it lists all scanned rooms.
- Clear the space: Push furniture to the walls, smooth out rug edges, put away glass and anything breakable. In HAUNTED you turn, lean forward, crouch, and crawl.
- Mark the couch zone: The three spectators sit outside the play area.
- Test casting: If possible, cast the headset view to a TV or phone so everyone can watch along.
- Charge the battery and have a charging cable ready.
- Talk through the content warning: Every time the game starts, it shows a two-page warning (loud noises, flickering and dimmed light, gore, intense jumpscares). Per the warning, don’t play if you’re pregnant or have epilepsy, a heart condition, or an anxiety disorder.
The run of show: about two hours
Round 1: a chapter pick per person (about 45 minutes)
Instead of having one person play the whole story, each person gets a chapter. Here’s a suggestion with few spoilers:
| Order | Chapter | Why start here |
|---|---|---|
| Person 1 | I The Witch | A good opener; the witch reacts to where you look |
| Person 2 | II The Hands | Knocking from the walls, an axe in hand, lots of movement |
| Person 3 | III The Doll | The doll copies your movements, very funny to watch |
| Person 4 | IV The Hole | Flashlight and revolver in the dark |
Anyone who wants more plays the remaining chapters in a second round. We save the finale and the epilogue for the bravest person.
Helpful: after every death, the game offers Help, an explanation of how to beat the chapter. From the third death in a chapter, Skip chapter also appears. So nobody gets stuck.
Break (about 10 minutes)
Headset off, lights on, drink some water. Wipe down the face pad. Anyone who’s had enough switches to the spectator role.
Round 2: arcade high score duel (about 40 minutes)
Now it gets competitive. Pick a mode and play in turns:
- Grave Rush: A wall breaks open onto a cemetery, and zombies come through the hole. Headshots earn bonus points.
- Arm Cutter: Knocking announces where the next arm breaks through the wall. A slice just before your face earns a CLOSE-CALL bonus.
- Skull Hunt: Dark room, flashlight in your left hand, revolver in your right. The beam of light freezes skulls.
Each person has three hearts per round. The mode’s top-5 list decides it. For fair scoring, everyone plays the same mode.
Wind down (about 15 minutes)
Lights on, music low, snacks. Anyone wired up after the scares needs a moment to come down. A quick airing out helps too.
A few ground rules for the night
- The player decides: No pressure to finish a chapter. Taking the headset off is okay at any time.
- No pranks: Nobody touches the player or adds extra scares. The game already does that well enough.
- Pets out: A cat in the play area is a real tripping hazard when you’re crawling.
Best for: Groups of adult friends with a Quest who want to celebrate Halloween at home and are up for real scares.
Skip if: Kids or teens are joining in, or someone in the group just doesn’t like horror. In that case, pick a more relaxed game instead.
Price and platform note
As of Oct 10, 2026, HAUNTED: Are You Alone? costs £3.99 in the UK Meta Horizon Store. According to the store, it runs on Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and Quest 3S and doesn’t need an internet connection. Here’s the store page for HAUNTED: Are You Alone?.
