In short: HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is a compact mixed-reality horror game that turns your real room into the setting. One story for one evening, three endless arcade modes for after, and all of it explicitly for adults only.

Why it made the parcel

Most horror games on Quest send you into somebody else’s haunted house. HAUNTED flips that. The game uses the room you scanned with Quest’s Space Setup and builds the level out of it: walls, floor and ceiling are part of the game. Arms break out of your walls, a hole opens in your floor, and a wall collapses to reveal a moonlit graveyard. Any room size works, according to the game’s details.

Three things sealed it for us:

  • A clear, self-contained experience. The story runs about 25 to 35 minutes. That fits into one evening without you having to grind through twenty hours of content.
  • Every chapter brings a new idea. A witch who comes closer when you look away. A doll that copies your movements. Skulls that are only visible in flashlight beam. A mirror you use to bounce beams back. There’s little repetition.
  • It keeps going afterward. Under “Games” there are three arcade modes with waves, points, coins and a highscore list. If you want more after the story, that’s where the replay value lives.

What it’s like to play

HAUNTED is story-driven jump-scare horror with a light dose of action. A little girl reaches you over an old rotary phone and guides you through the night. The tone is pure Halloween: children’s voices, a witch, a possessed porcelain doll, ghosts in the walls and loud scares.

What sets the game apart from classic VR horror is how much your body is involved. You spin around, lean over a hole in the floor, crouch, crawl on hands and knees through a tunnel and swing an axe or a baseball bat. Sound comes from real directions in your room: footsteps behind you, knocking in a wall, voices under the floor. On top of that there’s strong vibration feedback on hits and scares.

We appreciate that nobody has to get stuck. The game never moves the camera. After every death, the game-over screen offers a hint that explains how to beat the chapter. From your third death in a chapter, you can skip it. All chapters are also unlocked in the chapter select from the start.

You can play with hand tracking or with the Touch controllers, your choice. According to the store, no internet connection is required.

The arcade corner

The three modes turn story monsters into endless waves:

  • Grave Rush: zombie shooter in front of the graveyard behind your wall.
  • Arm Cutter: knocking sounds give away where the next arm will break through, and you chop it off.
  • Skull Hunt: dark room, flashlight in your left hand, revolver in your right, and the beam freezes skulls in midair.

All three share a combo multiplier up to ×8, three hearts, coins and the “Bone Market” shop, where you unlock and upgrade weapons. Each mode has a top-5 highscore list.

Who should read up first

The game carries a PEGI 18 rating with an “Extreme Violence” note. Every time you launch the app, a two-page content warning appears: sudden loud noises, flashing light and dimmed lighting, gore and intense jump scares. According to the warning, it’s not suitable for children, pregnant people, or people with epilepsy, heart conditions or anxiety disorders.

You also need clear floor space. Move furniture, cables and tables out of the way, because you’ll be turning, ducking and crawling. The store lists the play modes as “Room-scale” and “Standing”; the game isn’t made for sitting. Pets and other people shouldn’t wander through your play space unnoticed.

For streamers there’s a “Hide my room” mode: instead of the passthrough view, you see a virtual padded cell laid over your real walls. That way you don’t show your home, and the scares still land.

Best for: Adult horror fans with a Quest who want a short, intense scare in their own living room, plus a taste for a highscore chase afterward.

Skip if: You don’t like loud jump scares, you’re looking for a multiplayer title (HAUNTED is a pure single-player experience) or you’d rather play sitting down.

Our verdict in one sentence

For a small price you get one of the most personal scares mixed reality can currently deliver: it’s your room, and that’s exactly what makes it creepy.
