Set up HAUNTED in 10 minutes: your first-time guide

The short version: HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is quick to set up once your room is scanned and cleared. This guide takes you from download to main menu in ten minutes, so your evening doesn’t turn into a fight with cables and coffee tables.

Why the prep is worth it

HAUNTED uses your real room as the level. Walls, floor and ceiling are part of the game, so a lot rides on how well your Quest knows your space. You’ll also be moving a lot: spinning around, leaning in, crouching, and in one chapter even crawling on your hands and knees. Ten minutes of prep is the difference between a scare in the game and a bruise on your shin.

What you need

• A Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 or Quest 3S (supported per the store).
• Around 563 MB of free storage for the install; once installed the game takes up about 410 MB.
• A room with clear floor space. According to the game’s details, any room size works.
• Good lighting so the Quest’s cameras can map the room cleanly.

Per the store, you don’t need an internet connection to play.

Step 1: Clear your play space (3 minutes)

Before you put the headset on:

1. Push the coffee table, chairs and floor lamps to the edge.
2. Pick cables, toys and bags up off the floor. You’ll be close to the ground later.
3. Put glasses and anything breakable away.
4. Move pets into another room.

Clear space in the middle matters more than a big room. You’ll be swinging an axe and a baseball bat, so you need arm room all around you.

Step 2: Read the content warning (1 minute)

When it starts, HAUNTED shows a two-page content warning. It appears every time you launch the app, not just the first time. Really read it that first time. The game warns about sudden loud noises, flashing lights and dimmed lighting, gore and intense jump scares. Per the warning, it isn’t suitable for children, pregnant people, or people with epilepsy, heart conditions or anxiety disorders. The store’s age rating is PEGI 18.

Step 3: Pick a room or scan a new one (4 minutes)

After the warning comes room selection. Here HAUNTED lists every room you’ve already scanned on your headset.

• Already scanned a room? Pick the room you’re standing in. If you’ve rearranged things since your last scan, a fresh scan is worth it.
• No room yet? Tap “Scan a new room.” That opens the Quest’s room setup (Space Setup). Look around slowly so walls, floor, ceiling and furniture get captured, check the result and save.

A clean scan pays off, because the scares land on your real walls and your real floor.

Step 4: Land in the main menu (2 minutes)

After that, the main menu floats in your room. The key items:

• New game / Continue / New Game+: start or resume the story. New Game+ is the second run after the credits.
• Chapters: chapter select. All chapters are unlocked from the start.
• Games: the three arcade modes Grave Rush, Arm Cutter and Skull Hunt.
• Settings: includes switching rooms and “Hide my room.”

“Hide my room” replaces the passthrough view with a virtual padded cell mapped onto your real walls. Handy if you’re streaming and don’t want to show your apartment.

Hands or controllers?

HAUNTED supports hand tracking and the Touch controllers. For your first evening: go with whatever feels safer to you. Controllers give you vibration feedback on hits and scares, while hands make grabbing feel more natural. You can try both later.

Last check before you start

• Set the volume to a level that can handle the scares without hurting.
• Leave the lights on in the room so tracking stays stable.
• Let anyone else in the house know it might get loud.

And if you get stuck in a chapter: after every death the game offers help, and from the third death in a chapter you can skip it.

Best for: Anyone who just bought HAUNTED and wants to start their first evening without tech frustration.

Skip if: You’ve already scanned and cleared your room. Then a quick look at the list under “Main menu” is enough.
